Big Man Japan
Ummmm…. so, I just heard that they are re-releasing Big Man Japan in theaters across the nation. This shit is good. It’s so insanely bizarre and just crazy-weird and just, crazy-wonderful.
Austinites were lucky enough to have the world premiere of this movie last year- at Alamo Drafthouse South. And, I was lucky enough to attend. Yeah, me, alone and pregnant with just about every guy-nerd/dork/dweeb who happens to call Austin home. It was kinda funny. I was getting some stares for sure. But I didn’t care. I was just happy to be there to witness the awesomeness.
Ok, so, it’s a mockumentary of sorts (stars Japan’s equivalent of Will Ferrell) about a washed up superhero. He’s a regular guy by day and giant alien/monster-fighting superhero by night. The only thing- he totally sucks. And, all his fights are filmed and aired on live TV. He never wins a fight, gives up easily and is pretty much a major wimp. He’s trying to fill his dad’s and grandpa’s shoes (comes from a long line of giant super-hero, alien fighting bad-asses), but he just can’t manage to get it together and usually just ends up pissing off his PR rep and all his sponsors- yes, he has sponsors. And, he is totally despised by the public- it’s really kinda sad. The animation is crazy-cool and the monsters are so very freaky! My favorite monster is the long-necked comb-over dude.
Check out this trailer. And, if comes to your city, you should go see it. It definitely makes my top 20 favorite movie list of all time. Maybe even the top 10.
